When Is the Right Time to Replace Your Windows and Doors?

(5 min read)

You’re reading this post because you’re considering replacing your windows and/or doors. Perhaps you’d like to change the look of your home or increase its value. Maybe you’re concerned about rising energy costs and thinking about ways to reduce those energy bills. It could be that you’ve had your current windows and doors for a long time and think it must be time for an upgrade.

Quick FAQs

What are the benefits of upgrading my windows and doors?

Upgrading your windows and doors can have numerous benefits, including: improved energy efficiency, reduced air leakage, increased structural integrity, tighter security, improved aesthetics, and increasing the value of your property.

What signs mean I should replace my windows and doors?

The most obvious and typical signs that will indicate it’s time to upgrade your windows and doors are: condensation between the window panes, draughts coming from windows or doors, damaged window surfaces, and issues with opening, closing or locking windows or doors.

What should I look for when choosing new windows and doors?

When choosing new windows and doors, look for products with a low U-value and a low-E coating for improved energy efficiency, made of durable materials such as vinyl or fibreglass for increased structural integrity, advanced security features such as multi-point locking systems and reinforced frames for improved security, and a style and colour that complements your home's existing design for improved aesthetics.

How much does it cost to upgrade my windows and doors?

The cost of upgrading your windows and doors will vary depending on the type and quality of the products you choose, but on average, it can range from a few thousand pounds to tens of thousands of pounds.

When is the best time of year to replace windows?

There are pros and cons to replacing windows at different times of the year. Window and door replacements in the spring and summer mean the instalments are less likely to need rescheduling due to poor weather but these are the busier times of year for glazing companies. Upgrading your windows and doors in the autumn or winter will allow you to immediately reap the benefits of improved energy efficiency, contractors are likely to have better availability and you’ll often get a better price.

Read on to learn about spotting the signs you should upgrade your windows and doors, what to look for when replacing windows and doors, and when is considered the best time to upgrade.

Main Reasons to Replace Windows and Doors

Upgrading your windows and doors can be a big investment, but it can also add value to your home and improve energy efficiency. To help you decide if the time is right for you, we’ll look at some technical and personal reasons why it might be the right time to replace your existing windows and doors:

New Windows and Doors to Improve Energy Efficiency

Old, single-paned windows and doors can have a low U-value, which measures how well a material insulates. Upgrading to double or triple-paned windows with a low-E coating and a higher U-value can improve your home’s energy efficiency, reducing heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer. This will not only save you money on your energy bills but also make your home more comfortable to live in.

Replace Your Windows and Doors to Address Draughts

Over time, the seals around windows and doors can break down, leading to air leaks. Upgrading to windows and doors with better seals and weatherstripping can reduce air infiltration, improving your home’s overall energy efficiency. This will also reduce draughts, making your home more comfortable.

New Windows and Doors Can Improve the Structural Integrity of Your Home

Old windows and doors can become warped, swollen, or otherwise damaged, making them difficult to open and close. Upgrading to windows and doors made of more durable materials, such as vinyl or fibreglass, can improve the structural integrity of your home and prevent future problems. This will make it easier to open and close your windows and doors, saving you time and frustration.

Replacing Windows and Doors for Better Security

Older windows and doors may not have the latest locking mechanisms and security features, leaving your home vulnerable to break-ins. Upgrading to windows and doors with advanced security features, such as multi-point locking systems and reinforced frames, can improve the security of your home. This will give you peace of mind and protect your family and belongings.

Replacing Windows and Doors to Improve the Look and Value of Your Property

Upgrading your windows and doors can improve the appearance of your home and increase its curb appeal. This may be a more pressing issue if your windows or doors are chipped, cracked or damaged somehow. Choose windows and doors in a style and colour that complements your home’s existing design. This will not only make your home more visually appealing but also increase your home’s value.

When Is the Best Time of Year to Replace Windows and Doors?

If any of the above issues are pressing, such as damaged or warped windows or doors, significant problems with draughts, or you need to increase the value of your property before a sale, then it’s probably time to act, regardless of the time of year.
If replacing your windows and doors is less urgent, you can afford to make your decision based on several criteria:

  • Weather – If you’d like your windows and doors replaced during warmer, dryer weather, then it’s best to look to get the work done during spring, summer or early autumn. In the months when poor weather is more common, your installation carries more risk of needing to be rescheduled.
  • Availability – Glazing companies and fitters are busier in the spring and summer, so you may not be able to book the installation for the time you want. In the autumn and winter, contractors will have better availability – which is great for getting the exact date you want.
  • Price – Discounts and deals may be available at certain times of the year. As installers aim to schedule orders for the first part of the year, you will likely find seasonal discounts on offer during the spring. Equally, companies are often keen to gain your custom before Christmas and may drop their prices if you book your installation before mid-December.

On balance, springtime may offer the most benefits: the opportunity to take advantage of some great deals, less chance of your instalment needing to be rescheduled and warmer, dryer weather while the work is carried out.

So, Is Now the Right Time to Replace My Windows and Doors?

In conclusion, upgrading your windows and doors can have numerous technical and personal benefits, including improved energy efficiency, reduced air leakage, increased structural integrity, improved security, improved aesthetics and increased value of the property.

Consider all these factors when making your decision on whether or not to upgrade your existing windows and doors. The right time to upgrade your windows and doors will depend on your specific needs and budget, but when you do make the investment, you’ll reap the benefits for years to come.

Was looking for a new front door, to replace our tragically 80's monstrosity. The Three Counties website was great as i could see and design the door i wanted and then get a quote for it. The sales team was really quick to respond, and not at all pushy. A survey was easily arranged, to confirm sizes etc and the installer turned up precisely on time, was super friendly, efficient, neat and very tidy. Whole process took about 4 weeks, beginning to end, and I now have the door of my dreams! The only downside is my neighbors keep pestering me for details of who did the job. No hesitation in recommending Three Counties.

This is the second time I have used Three Counties , a few years later and in a different house this time. It’s great to see the quality of the windows and workmanship have remained 5*. A stress free installation from start to finish, all windows installed have transformed how our 70s style house looks and now no worries of mould as a result of the old timber framed windows. The Installers who completed our job were amazing, and I mean amazing! Hard working, extremely skilful at their trade, polite and very tidy. Each day when they left they hovered up and left the place in the best condition they could. The whole process from the initial quote , measurements and dealing with the office team before and after the installation has been a true pleasure , if only all businesses were as efficient as this. Highly recommended for anyone considering new windows or any other products they provide and I won’t hesitate to use them again. Thank you Three counties!

I shopped around and three counties came in at the most reasonably priced, and I used the buy now pay later option. Really happy with my new door and window, which were both fitted in one afternoon. The customer service was very good throughout and everything went smoothly.

I had some windows fitted a few years ago and have recently had a problem with one of the locking mechanism failing. I called 3 Counties, who had a base call out charge, where a lovely lady took my details, refered to my file and we agreed a date when the fitter would come out and inspect the issue. Paul arrived bang on time and was very helpful. He checked the window, confirmsd the issue and promptly fixed it there and then with a replacement part he had on board his van. He was polite and knowledgable. Very efficient. Thank you 3 Counties.
