What to Consider When Buying a New Front Door

(4 min read)

The front door of your home serves as both a functional and aesthetic element, making a statement about your home’s style and character. When it comes to purchasing a new front door, there are several important factors to consider to ensure you make the best choice for your home.

Quick FAQs

What are the most secure materials for front doors?

Steel and solid wood doors are generally considered to be the most secure materials for front doors due to their durability and strength.

Can I customise the style of my front door?

Yes, many front doors offer options for customisation, including different styles, colours, finishes, and decorative elements to match your home's aesthetic.

How much should I budget for a new front door?

Front door prices vary depending on material, design, features, and brand. It's important to set a budget that fits your needs and research options within that budget.

In this post, we provide guidance to support you when buying a new front door and offer advice on security, efficiency, style and budget. We’ve added a few additional tips at the end, too!

Front Doors and Security

The security of your home and loved ones is paramount. Look for doors made from durable and sturdy materials, such as steel, fibreglass or solid wood, with a strong frame and reliable hardware.

The most secure type of front doors are composite doors. Composite doors are made from a combination of materials, including wood, fibreglass, and steel. This makes them strong and durable, and they can withstand even the most determined burglars.

Composite doors typically have multi-point locking systems, which means that there are multiple points of contact between the door and the frame. Deadbolts and reinforced glass also provide added security.

You might also wish to consider doors with peepholes or wide-angle viewers to enhance your ability to see who is at your front door before opening it, adding an extra layer of security for peace of mind.

Energy Efficiency of Front Doors

Energy efficiency is crucial for maintaining a comfortable home and reducing energy costs – something on everyone’s minds right now. Look for doors that are insulated and have weatherstripping to prevent drafts.

Vinyl (or uPVC) doors are not as energy-efficient as other materials, such as wood or fibreglass. However, they are more affordable and when expertly installed, with high-quality weatherstripping, they provide excellent protection against heat loss.

Doors with a high energy efficiency rating, such as ENERGY STAR-certified doors, can minimise heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer, saving you money on energy bills. Choosing an efficient front door is not only environmentally responsible but also cost-effective in the long run.

Selecting the Perfect Style of Front Door

Your front door is a focal point of your home’s curb appeal. Consider the architectural style of your home and choose a front door that complements it. There are various styles and designs available, from traditional to modern, rustic to contemporary, with options for different colours, finishes, and decorative elements, such as glass panels or intricate detailing.

Don’t forget to consider the hardware, such as doorknobs, handles, and hinges, to ensure they match the overall style of the door and your home, adding a touch of personalisation.

Budget Considerations When Buying a New Front Door

Setting a budget is an important consideration when purchasing a new front door. Front doors come in a wide range of prices, so it’s important to determine a budget that fits your needs.

The most affordable material for front doors is vinyl. Vinyl doors are made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is a durable and low-maintenance material. They are strong and durable, virtually maintenance-free and come in a wide range of styles and colours.

Keep in mind that while it may be tempting to opt for a cheaper door, it may not provide the same level of security, efficiency, and durability as a higher-priced door. Consider the long-term value and benefits of investing in a quality front door, which can enhance your home’s curb appeal and provide a better performance, potentially saving you money on maintenance and replacement costs down the road.

Some Additional Tips for Choosing a New Front Door

  • Measure your existing door before you start shopping. This will ensure that you get a door that fits properly.
  • Consider the climate in your area. If you live in a cold climate, you’ll want a door that is well-insulated.
  • Think about the traffic in your home. If you have young children or pets, you’ll want a door that is easy to open and close.
  • Don’t forget the hardware. The hardware on your front door can make a big statement. Choose hardware that complements the style of your door and your home.
  • Check warranty options. Most front doors come with a warranty. Make sure you read the warranty carefully so that you know what is covered.

Was looking for a new front door, to replace our tragically 80's monstrosity. The Three Counties website was great as i could see and design the door i wanted and then get a quote for it. The sales team was really quick to respond, and not at all pushy. A survey was easily arranged, to confirm sizes etc and the installer turned up precisely on time, was super friendly, efficient, neat and very tidy. Whole process took about 4 weeks, beginning to end, and I now have the door of my dreams! The only downside is my neighbors keep pestering me for details of who did the job. No hesitation in recommending Three Counties.

This is the second time I have used Three Counties , a few years later and in a different house this time. It’s great to see the quality of the windows and workmanship have remained 5*. A stress free installation from start to finish, all windows installed have transformed how our 70s style house looks and now no worries of mould as a result of the old timber framed windows. The Installers who completed our job were amazing, and I mean amazing! Hard working, extremely skilful at their trade, polite and very tidy. Each day when they left they hovered up and left the place in the best condition they could. The whole process from the initial quote , measurements and dealing with the office team before and after the installation has been a true pleasure , if only all businesses were as efficient as this. Highly recommended for anyone considering new windows or any other products they provide and I won’t hesitate to use them again. Thank you Three counties!

I shopped around and three counties came in at the most reasonably priced, and I used the buy now pay later option. Really happy with my new door and window, which were both fitted in one afternoon. The customer service was very good throughout and everything went smoothly.

I had some windows fitted a few years ago and have recently had a problem with one of the locking mechanism failing. I called 3 Counties, who had a base call out charge, where a lovely lady took my details, refered to my file and we agreed a date when the fitter would come out and inspect the issue. Paul arrived bang on time and was very helpful. He checked the window, confirmsd the issue and promptly fixed it there and then with a replacement part he had on board his van. He was polite and knowledgable. Very efficient. Thank you 3 Counties.
